The Second Seamus Mallon ‘ A Shared Home Place’ Lecture – Sir Hugh Orde OBE
Sir Hugh Orde OBE, former PSNI Chief Constable delivered the 2nd Annual Seamus Mallon Lecture.
This was followed by a conversation with Denis Bradley, Vice Chair of NI Policing Board 2001-2006.
This annual lecture honours the late Seamus Mallon MP for Newry & Armagh from 1996-2006 and played a key role in the transformation of policing and justice.
The pinnacle of Seamus Mallon’s political career was his rise to the role of Deputy First Minister in the Northern Ireland Assembly. He was recognised as one of the oldest hands in Irish politics, played a central role in the peace process and was a key architect of the Good Friday Agreement. In 2019 he published ‘A Shared Home Place’

1. Sir Hugh Orde recognised and acknowledged each of the partners in 1st and 2nd Board from 2001 of -2007, ensured 85% of Patten achieved, that they “got it right every single time.”
- Sir Hugh Orde made positive defence of 50;50 and asserted that “confidence” was “directly related to this recommendation.” The call for “a serious national debate” on future recruitment measures in Britain very interesting.
- Sir Hugh Orde suggests it is “time for a proper enquiry into policing (in UK) along the lines of the 1960 Royal commission” and that “it would draw a lot from the Patten recommendations.”
- Sir Hugh Orde “I hope the uncertainty created by these political failures are not seen as an opportunity by that tiny minority who want to drag us backwards. What I do know is that the men and women of the new (well relatively new) PSNI will be there to protect all the citizens of this wonderful place to the very best of their ability, and continue to play their part in what is still, in my judgement a fragile peace.”
